Can they actually ask for that?

Queensland limits what a rental application can demand: two documents per category, three categories, and a short list of things that can't be requested at all. Tick what you've been asked for and see where the line is.

    Before you go in swinging

Most over-asking is habit, not malice: forms built before the rules changed, or a template nobody's updated. A polite line usually sorts it: "I'm happy to provide two documents from each category as the RTA form sets out. Which two would you prefer?" You've shown you know the rule without making it a fight, and you've stayed the easy applicant.

If it's one of the prohibited items, you can simply decline. You're also entitled to a non-restrictive way to apply, which means the standard Form 22 rather than a third-party platform, if you ask.

    Where this comes from

Since 1 May 2025, Queensland property managers and owners must use the standard rental application form (Form 22) and can only request information that appears on it. Supporting documents are capped at two per category across identity, financial ability and suitability. Certain requests are prohibited outright, and at least two ways to apply must be offered with at least one non-restrictive. Penalties apply for breaches. Full detail at the RTA.
